We are a bicultural centre, acknowledging that Māori are tangata whenua. We aim to work in partnership, welcoming the richness that all our different cultures bring.  We acknowledge that through working closely with all our families we will enable each child to reach their full potential.

We provide a stimulating environment within a caring Christian setting.  We incorporate a mathematical and literacy-rich curriculum into all aspects of our programme.  Music, art, science and transition to school activities are all integrated.  Our natural outdoor area provides an inspiring play space for children.

Our programme reflects our belief that children learn best through a combination of self-choice and structured activities.  We aim to provide a programme where children experience the wonder and joy of learning, within a context of positive relationships with teachers and other children.  This will include opportunities to develop life and learning skills such as courage, curiosity, trust, perseverance, confidence, independence, reflection and leadership.

Children are encouraged to have respect for all, including one’s self and for their environment.  Emphasis is placed on the development of Christian values such as honesty, self-control, kindness and co-operation.

The Lighthouse aims to empower each child with the belief that they are special, that they have gifts and abilities unique to them and all are equal in the eyes of Jesus Christ.

The nursery is licensed for 14 children but we choose to have a maximum of 10 children.  We have one teacher for every four children.

A Primary care-giving policy for these children ensures that the needs of both infant and parent are met, and that the care given provides consistency between the Centre and home setting.

Infants/toddlers are able to sleep in the cots provided whenever they are tired. Favourite toys or blankets are welcome to help your child settle, or for bedtime.

Documentation is held on all children and their activities each day and this encourages information sharing between teachers and parents through a different medium.

The Ministry of Education has set out a curriculum for Early Childhood Education.  This curriculum is called Te Whaariki, meaning the Interwoven Mat.  The daily programme is based around an area of interest that has been initiated by the children during their play.  The topic of interest, or storyline, will run as long as the children have an interest.  The activities relating to the focus are listed on the planning sheet and are selected to ensure that the Centre provides a programme that meets the strands and goals set out in Te Whaariki.  Parents/caregivers are welcome to contribute any resources or knowledge they may have on a particular focus.

The Preschool offers an Extension Programme for older children to help develop essential skills and to encourage links with school. This is held with a small group of older children, for up to 30 minutes and covers such topics as numeracy and literacy.

Teach a child how he should live and he will remember it all his life.
