Welcome to Selwyn House Pre-school
I am proud to lead the Pre-school community and enjoy working with new and existing families. Together with our fully qualified, passionate, and dedicated teaching team, we encourage each child to develop strong relationships which enhances their individual learning needs. Combined with the PYP programme, Reggio Emilia approach and our unique specialist programme we offer children a variety of opportunities which helps them grow. Our low student-to-teacher ratio ensures that your child’s needs will be met and personalised.
As the only Pre-school in the South Island that offers the International Baccalaureate Programme, and influenced by Reggio Emilia, our educational philosophy incorporates an international perspective into our inquiry-based Pre-school. In an environment that supports “The 100 Languages,” the children’s questions drive their learning. Our hands-on and life activities support an expanding awareness and respect for other cultures and perspectives.
I personally invite you to visit Selwyn House Pre-school, or contact me directly for more information.

Our Philosophy
Selwyn House Pre-school has an outstanding reputation in early childhood education. Our unique programme is based on the world-renowned Reggio Emilia approach and complimented by the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme and the Te Whāriki Curriculum. It celebrates the natural wonder and curiosity of children and fosters a life-long love of learning.
We recognise that our unique bicultural heritage is founded in the Te Tiriti o Waitangi and that our tamariki have the right to experience the languages, music, art and stories and cultures of Aotearoa. Selwyn House Pre-school will honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi by representing Māori views and choices and their place as Tangata Whenua.
We believe that learning during the early years of life is critical for the development of the whole person and our inquiry-based programme reflects the interests of the tamariki and encourages them to take responsibility for their own learning.
Our teachers believe strongly in a child with unlimited potential who is eager to interact with, and contribute to the world around them. Every day we remind ourselves of one of the core elements of our philosophy, which is the belief in the child as a capable individual full of curiosity about his or her world.
Our educational philosophy incorporates an international perspective into our inquiry-based Pre-school. In this environment, the children’s questions drive the learning. Our hands-on and life activities support an expanding awareness and respect for other cultures.
Our focus is on teaching the children how to ask questions, how to research and how to present information. An inquiry-based approach reflects what we know about how children learn by promoting their active involvement.
